Each spring and fall, we schedule trips to regional and federal prisons, in both minimum and maximum units, where we play softball and basketball against the inmates and share the message of truth during or after play. These trips are different from our others trips as they can be canceled on a moment’s notice due to their volatile environment. However, when we are able to visit, our guys have the chance to share their stories of what God has done in their lives and God has done some amazing things through these trips. We have shared with 2,876 inmates, 479 who have made a decision to follow Christ.
It’s always incredible to see inmates surrender in a place where toughness is at a premium. It’s encouraging to reunite with guys who have made decisions in the past and see them growing in their faith. But, we are always amazed to see what God does in the lives of those that go. Here are a few comments from our participants who sacrificed their time to serve and share.
I am not a person who will strike up a conversation with a total stranger about Jesus, God, or being saved. I will strike up conversations about church and invite people to church, but never specifically about being saved or how to become saved. This trip gave me a chance to step out of my comfort zone and ask some questions I have never asked before.
This made me appreciate the little things more and pray more before I make decisions in my life. It is by the grace of God that 59 men prayed to receive Christ. I sure didn’t feel like I did anything special down there. But, sometimes God just asks us to go and he’ll take care of the rest.
God really has used these prison trips to humble me, and put me in my place. He’s continually showing me the vast fields and opportunities that there are to serve Him, no matter where I am.
Once the teams return, we send the inmates who made a decision a Bible and devotional to begin their new walk with Christ. We also work to connect them with inmates who are growing and trying to reach others behind those bars with the freedom God offers. Please pray about how you might be involved in our Prison Ministry and email our staff if you would like to get more information and participate in an upcoming trip.
